Antique and vintage beaded necklaces in good condition are left untouched. However, those in need of a re-string, or that have a poor design, are broken down and mixed with other complimentary antique and vintage materials to create brand new but eco-friendly designs.

If the clasps and findings are in good condition they are used again but normally new ones in silver, gold filled, copper and brass need to be used along with a Lottie Bogotti jewellery logo tag. Some pieces, especially the long beaded necklaces, are hand knotted with beading cord but most are strung on nylon or beading wire.

You cannot find a more genuinely unique range of handcrafted hand knotted beaded jewellery made using vintage or antique beads. These really are the most unique beaded necklaces anywhere as not only are the materials unique but so too are the designs.

Most beads are gently cleaned but some materials, such as coral, are better left untouched as cleaning them removes the patina which has developed over time and adds appeal to the finished piece.

Nothing is mass produced at Lottie Bogotti as there is only one person making things and running the business. It's not unusual for a necklace to take a week to make due to so many interruptions. Each piece will have involved a lot of attention to detail from sourcing the original necklaces individually (nothing is bulk bought), matching up the different colours, styles and sizes of beads and holes, thinking of interesting designs and the actual making of the jewellery. No two pieces are the same.

Part of the charm in the pieces is the fact a lot of the beads were made by hand and are therefore irregular. Many of the hand blown glass beads have also been faceted by hand conjuring up images of a man sitting at a grinding machine with a tiny bead creating sometimes over one hundred facets, each of a slightly different shape and size. This kind of quality cannot be bought new. No-one makes them like this anymore.

The jewellery has a subtle, expensive quality which new jewellery lacks. The Bakelite beads have faded to tints of their original bright colours, the coral has a dusky look to it, the mother of pearl is creamy and flashes beautifully, the wood beads are smooth and mellowed like antique furniture, the agate beads have pits, lines and inclusions adding character which is rarely seen in new jewellery.

On a final note, the jewellery at Lottie Bogotti is of value and will at least hold its value. The materials used are real as opposed to most fashion costume jewellery. For example, most of the coral used is Mediterranean coral taken from antique necklaces. Mediterranean coral jewellery is set to increase in value rapidly once stocks in the sea have been depleted which, unfortunately, they probably will be.

It shows more individual style and prudence to buy antique, vintage or re-designed jewellery.
