1. Get out of the seasonal shopping cycle which has only encouraged you to feel unfashionable every few months, spend more money than you would like, discard perfectly good clothing and add to our environmental problems.

2. Buy things you like and not what the fashion industry dictates to you. Find your own style and allow it to develop over time. Find out what colours suit you and build your wardrobe around them. Become an individual who expresses their own style and not designers'. In short, become your own stylist.

3. Buy better and less. Think how much of your wardrobe gets worn more than a couple of times. If only half (the norm) gets worn, realise you could halve the amount of clothes you buy and therefore double the value of purchases. Buy things you will wear to death because you love them to death. You will excude more style and individuality by wearing more unusual, unique and expensive items which change less than wearing cheap clothes and accessories which change often.

4. Buy natural and real rather than synthetic. It is true that the production of cotton is not without its problems but at least it does biodegrade and clothing made from natural fibres are likely to last longer. Avoid buying new plastic handbags, jewellery and accessories like the plague no matter how tempting they are.

5. Take extra care when buying shoes and boots to ensure you don't end up discarding badly fitted footwear.

6. Hold clothes and accessories swap parties with friends as a way of getting rid of your unwanted things and going home with something you love. Your trash is someone else's treasure.

7. Give unwanted goods to charity shops, churches and schools for re-sale, and damaged clothing, costume jewelry, bags to recycling centres or designers who may be able to make use of the materials.

8. Buy from businesses which make a smaller environmental footprint than others, thanks to the effort they make.
